Diamond Box helps businesses navigate the complexity of PPWR

Confused about the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Diamond Box is here to help with your corrugated packaging related questions and queries.

For businesses across many sectors, sustainability is no longer just a trend, but a must-have. The shift is being driven by numerous factors including mounting pressure from a variety of stakeholders, and the impact of a changing regulatory landscape – particular legislation in the realm of packaging.

For businesses operating overseas, postal packaging plays an essential role in successful trading. Therefore, for those selling in EU member states, business leaders will need to be aware of the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Introducing the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will soon replace the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) – the existing legislation in the region. The PPWR aims to continuously improve the environmental performance of packaging, by reducing (over)packaging, improving packaging reuse and driving the uptake of recycled content in packaging.

When will the PPWR come into force?

The PPWR was recently adopted by the European Parliament, but it has yet to come into force. It has been widely reported that the final text will become law towards the end of 2024.

Will PPWR mean significant change for businesses in the UK?

What does this all mean for UK businesses? And what steps should you be taking to minimise disruption by the time the regulation is enforced in 2025?

Firstly, it’s important to note that if you export to the EU these the new rules will apply to all packaging placed on the EU market. That means packaging imported from the UK.

Here are just a few examples of how businesses will need to adapt their packaging in order to comply with it:

  • Reducing packaging: The regulation will set new targets for businesses to reduce their packaging waste by 5% by 2030, 10% by 2035, and 15% by 2040.
  • Banning single-use plastics: The law will look to ban certain types of single-use plastic packaging from January 1, 2030, including packaging for fruit and vegetables, food and beverages, and lightweight plastic bags.
  • Reducing empty space: the new rules will limit the amount of empty space in packaging to 50% for grouped, transport, and e-commerce packaging.
  • Minimising packaging: The regulation will require manufacturers and importers to reduce the weight and volume of packaging.
  • Increasing recyclability: The PPWR will require packaging to be designed for recycling and meet recyclability performance grades.
