Ahead of World Environment Day 2025, which takes place annually on 5 June, we’re taking a look at how sustainable packaging, and specifically corrugated cardboard packaging, can contribute help tackle plastic pollution.
World Environment Day 2025
World Environment Day was launched by the United Nations in 1972 to encourage action to protect the planet. It has since grown into a global platform with participation from over 150 countries.
Each year, World Environment Day is hosted by a different country and has a specific theme that highlights a pressing environmental issue. In 2025, the Republic of Korea is hosting the global celebrations, with Jeju Province – known for its environmental innovation – serving as the central venue.
And the theme observed this year will be a renewed focus on the urgent issue of plastic pollution, forming part of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) broader #BeatPlasticPollution campaign. This makes 2025 particularly interesting for Diamond Box, as we continue to innovate and promote cardboard boxes as an alternative to plastic packaging.
Plastic versus corrugated cardboard packaging
The sustainability and circularity of packaging continues to be a major concern for FMCG brands. Lightweight and fully recyclable, industrial corrugated packaging is the most sustainable alternative, in many cases, to plastic or other materials.
Packaging has been dominated by plastic since the years following World War II when it became more widely produced for commercial purposes. Today, the UK generates around 2.5 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste annually. While plastic can be recycled, a significant amount still ends up in landfill sites or discarded in our oceans or green spaces. In light of this, there has already been a significant shift away from plastic and towards corrugated cardboard.
The future of packaging as part of global changes
Making more environmentally conscious choices is not only incredibly important for the continued health of the planet and future generations, but the switch will likely prove vital for the future of retailers and brands.
As the government implements more regulations reducing the use of single-use-plastics and tighter recycling laws, it’s likely that these eco-conscious products will become the norm. Getting ahead of the game, introducing your customers to these pack formats and brands early will make this transition smoother for both the business and the end customer.
Meeting customer demands with sustainable packaging
Research shows that 69% of consumers say sustainability is more important to them than ever, with 77% willing to quit brands that aren’t doing enough to ensure products are sustainable.
It’s no surprise that corrugated cardboard is proving the solution of choice for many businesses as it not only offers a more eco-friendly alternative but also a wealth of other benefits including:
- Corrugated cardboard is readily recyclable, making it a circular material.
- It is biodegradable, minimising its environmental impact after disposal.
- Its lightweight nature reduces transportation emissions, as well as making it easier to deal with
- It offers almost never-ending customisations to fit various product shapes and sizes..
- It provides excellent protection for products during transit.
