DiamondBox’s Guide to Cardboard Box Packaging

Cardboard Boxes for Packaging

Made up of recycled paper, cardboard boxes are an effective way to securely transport goods. Predominately utilised by businesses and consumers, there are many cardboard box types varying in shapes and styles for any need.

What is Cardboard Box Packaging?

As one of the most commonly used packaging types, cardboard box packaging is easily identifiable. The brown cardboard box is made from corrugated cardboard. Corrugated cardboard is made from 100% recycled material. In most cases, this type of packaging can be reused for other purposes. Once it has reached the end of its life, it can then be recycled.

There are different board grades, but what are they and most importantly how does this impact you? Board grades are based on the quality, type and weight of the material which is used to make the cardboard. Heavier items require a high grade of corrugated cardboard. The high grade means that the cardboard box is stronger and more durable.

Initially, when you think about cardboard box packaging you immediately think of the usual cube or cuboid-shaped brown box. Nowadays the design of the box can be customised. The colour and shape can be adapted. Alongside this, the shape of the box can be customised to fit your product's needs. The level of protection of your product can also be customised based on the product’s needs. Specialist handling instructions can be clearly displayed on the packaging; letting handlers how to move the package.

Types of Cardboard Box Packaging?

What are the different types of cardboard, below we will go through the 3 types of cardboard box packaging.

Single Wall Boxes

As we briefly mentioned above single-wall boxes are made from corrugated cardboard. It is made up of three layers, two flat pieces of cardboard and a fluted middle layer. With many sizes and shapes available it is no wonder single-wall boxes are the most commonly used cardboard packaging out there.

With one of the many uses of single wall boxes being postal deliveries and shipments, single wall boxes can help businesses save money. When compared to double and triple wall boxes, single wall boxes are deemed the most cost-effective out of the three. The packaging offers protection for the product(s) within as it absorbs any impact that the packaging comes into contact with whilst it is being transported.

Single-wall boxes have the capability to hold up to 10kg of items. Anything over 10kg risks the structure of the box collapsing. There are many uses for single-wall boxes some include, postal deliveries, moving-out boxes, shoe boxes and gift boxes.

Double Wall Boxes

Double wall boxes are a sturdy and secure way to transport and store goods. Compared to single-wall cardboard boxes, double-wall boxes utilise 2 layers of single-wall corrugated cardboard. In total there are three pieces of flat cardboard and two layers of fluted cardboard inbetween. With the addition of the extra layers, double wall boxes offer a higher level of protection making them suitable for transporting and storing goods.

There are many purposes for double wall boxes. The rigidity of this type of cardboard box packaging means that the boxes can be safely stacked on top of each other without collapsing or losing its integrity. Making it much safer for warehouse staff who handle boxes that are stacked. From home décor to heavy and weighted equipment (e.g. gym equipment), double wall boxes are ideal for transporting goods that weigh up to 30kg.

The materials' strength and durability make it ideal for businesses which need to transport goods from the business premises to the end customer. If the packaging is handled badly during transit, the box should maintain its strength better than single-wall boxes. The appearance of the packaging when the customer receives it will impact the customer experience. If the packaging looks good, this will reflect well on the business and brand reputation. But if the package looks bad (for example has been accidentally ripped in the corner), then this will negatively affect the customer experience when they receive the product.

Triple Wall Boxes

Similarly to single and double wall boxes, triple wall boxes are made from corrugated cardboard. With three layers of fluted cardboard between four pieces of flat pieces of cardboard, triple wall boxes are the most durable form of corrugated cardboard packaging available.

This type of cardboard packaging is ideal for weights of 50kg or more. That’s around 10x more in strength than double wall boxes. It’s no wonder that triple wall boxes are sometimes used as an alternative choice to wooden crates. Not only is it easier to recycle, but it is also a much lighter alternative. Allowing you to save on transport costs.

Predominantly used for exports, this type of corrugated packaging is ideal for transporting items that weigh 50kg or more. Items such as machinery, metal parts (e.g.steel bars) and boilers are heavily protected. It offers protection from any impact that comes along with transporting goods. Alongside this, the triple wall boxes can be stacked, during transportation and whilst in storage. Allowing for space to be saved whilst it is in transit vans and in warehouses. Thus, resulting in your business saving money.

FEFCO Cardboard Box Styles: What Styles do Cardboard Boxes Come In?

Originally developed in the 1960s, FEFCO is a European system that the corrugated industry across the UK and Europe follows.

The cardboard box types are categorised into telescope boxes, slotted boxes and folded-type boxes and trays. Within each of these categories are unique 4-digit codes which are used to describe each type of box available.

One of the main benefits of the FEFCO cardboard system is that the numerical code can be understood in different countries no matter what language they may speak it. Thus helping to improve the buying process. Alongside this, all the FEFCO cardboard box types are designed to make use of corrugated cardboard sheets- helping to cut down waste for cardboard box manufacturers and the overall cost for you.
